Parent & Toddler and Preschool

First skills, growing confidence and plenty of fun

Our preschool classes introduce young children to gymnastics through playful, structured activities. Balancing, rolling, climbing and jumping help develop coordination, strength and confidence, while learning to listen, take turns and enjoy being part of a group.

No previous experience is needed. Our coaches encourage children to explore new movements at their own pace, building a foundation for recreational gymnastics as they grow.

Recreational Classes

Build skills, grow in confidence and enjoy being active.

Our recreational classes give children the opportunity to discover gymnastics in a friendly, supportive environment. From learning their first roll to mastering a new skill, every gymnast can experience the satisfaction of making progress and being part of Kingston.

Who are the classes for?

Our recreational programme welcomes children aged 5 to 18, including complete beginners and those with previous gymnastics experience.

Children do not need to be able to do the splits, cartwheel or handstand before joining. We help them build their skills and confidence at a pace that suits them.

What happens in a session?

Sessions combine a warm-up, gymnastics activities and opportunities to practise skills with guidance from our coaches.

Children work on movements such as balancing, rolling, jumping and landing, developing towards more challenging skills as they become ready. Activities encourage them to try new things, work together and enjoy moving.

More than gymnastics skills

Through regular participation, children can develop:

  • Confidence through trying new challenges and recognising their achievements.
  • Coordination, balance and strength through varied physical activities.
  • Friendships and belonging as part of a welcoming club.
  • Perseverance as they practise and build on what they have learnt.
  • Gymnastics skills that provide a foundation for future progress.

If your child needs additional support, or you are unsure which session would suit them, please contact us before booking so we can discuss how to help them take part.

A pathway that suits your child

Recreational gymnastics offers opportunities to keep learning, achieve awards and celebrate personal progress. Children can enjoy developing within the programme without needing to compete.

We work towards Gymnastics Foundation awards and offer gymnasts the opportunity to test their skills for these awards twice a year.

For gymnasts interested in other opportunities, our coaches can discuss possible routes into display or acrobatic gymnastics, depending on their interests, readiness and available places. As they get older, they may also be interested in our young leader and coach development programme.

Display Squad

Build skills, perform together and be part of a team

Our Display Team gives gymnasts the opportunity to develop their skills, learn group routines and enjoy performing together. Combining gymnastics, movement and teamwork, display is a chance to build confidence and share the excitement of a performance.

Who is it for?

Display offers a progression opportunity for recreational gymnasts who enjoy learning routines, working with others and performing. Entry is by coach invitation or a tryout, allowing coaches to consider each gymnast’s skills, readiness and enthusiasm. Gymnasts do not need to arrive knowing how to perform a complete routine.

What happens in a session?

Sessions combine gymnastics skills, conditioning and group choreography. Gymnasts practise individual movements and learn how to bring them together into a team performance.

Working on timing, formations and shared routines helps everyone understand their role and contribute to the team.

More than gymnastics skills

Through regular participation, children can develop:

  • Performance confidence through preparing for and taking part in events.
  • Teamwork and friendships through working towards a shared goal.
  • Coordination, strength and flexibility through regular training.
  • Creativity and expression through movement and choreography.
  • Commitment and pride in contributing to a team performance.

Training and participation

Training commitment: Minimum 3 hours weekly team training plus weekend events
Days and times: Tuesday Evening
Costs: Monthly coaching fees, KGC Membership, Scottish Gymnastics membership,  routine specific leotards, event entry and event travel

Regular attendance is essential for gymnasts to learn routines together and prepare confidently for performances. Expectations and planned events will be explained before a place is accepted.

How to Join

The usual route into Display is through our recreational classes. Coaches may invite gymnasts to try a session or attend a tryout when opportunities arise.

If your child is interested, speak to their recreational coach. They can explain what Display involves and discuss suitable next steps. An invitation to try out is an opportunity to explore the programme; a team place depends on readiness and availability.

Continuing to develop

Display gymnasts can build increasingly confident performance skills and take on new challenges within group routines. As they grow older, they may also be interested in contributing through our young leader and coach development programme.

Acrobatic Gymnastics

Develop strength, balance and trust

Acrobatic gymnastics combines strength, balance and precision with the challenge and excitement of competition. Gymnasts work in partnerships or small groups, performing routines that bring together balances, dynamic movements and choreography.

Our Acro programme offers a progression route for recreational gymnasts who want to develop their skills further and work towards competitive gymnastics. It encourages gymnasts to strive for their personal best, support their partners and take pride in representing Kingston.

Who is it for?

Acro may suit gymnasts who enjoy a challenge, are motivated to improve and want to compete as part of a partnership or group.

Entry is by coach invitation or a tryout. Coaches consider skills, readiness, commitment and the potential to form suitable partnerships. A positive attitude towards learning and working with others is important.

What happens in a session?

Training combines conditioning, flexibility, individual gymnastics skills and supervised partner or group work.

Gymnasts develop balances, supported movements and choreographed routines, working towards the control, timing and presentation needed for competition. Coaches help them refine their performance, respond to feedback and prepare for the experience of competing.

More than gymnastics skills

Through regular participation, children can develop:

  • Strength, flexibility and precision through structured training.
  • Competitive experience through preparing and performing routines.
  • Trust and teamwork through shared goals and responsibilities.
  • Resilience and sportsmanship through managing challenges, results and feedback.
  • Confidence and ambition through recognising progress and striving to improve.

Training and competition

Training commitment: Minimum of 4 hours per week over at least two evenings
Costs: Monthly coaching fees, KGC Membership, Scottish Gymnastics membership, routine specific leotards, event entry and event travel

Regular attendance and commitment are essential because partners and groups train and compete together. Coaches will explain training expectations and the anticipated competition programme before a place is accepted.

How to join

Our recreational classes provide a foundation for Acro. Coaches may invite gymnasts to attend a tryout or introductory squad session when opportunities arise.

If your child is interested in competitive gymnastics, speak to their recreational coach. They can discuss readiness, areas to develop and possible next steps.

A tryout does not guarantee a squad place. Offers depend on readiness, suitable partnerships and availability.

Progressing in competitive gymnastics

Coaches support gymnasts to develop routines, set goals and prepare for competitions suited to their experience and readiness. Kingston is proud of its track record of gymnasts competing at local, regional and Scottish levels.

We celebrate competitive success alongside personal progress, recognising improved performances, growing confidence and individual achievements as well as scores and placings. Gymnasts are encouraged to show good sportsmanship, respect fellow competitors and support their teammates.

Through our young leader programme, gymnasts can also develop leadership and coaching skills, sharing their experience and contributing to the club.

Young Leaders

KGC offers opportunities for gymnasts to develop as young leaders and progress towards qualified coaching roles.

  • Young leaders gain experience supporting sessions alongside qualified coaches, encouraging younger gymnasts and building communication and leadership skills.
  • Level 1 coaches develop their skills as qualified assistant coaches, working under the supervision of a lead coach.
  • Level 2 coaches can take greater responsibility for planning and leading sessions within their qualification.
  • Level 3 and further development provide opportunities to build more advanced coaching expertise and support gymnast progression.

Paid coaching opportunities may become available at KGC, depending on qualifications, experience and club needs. Our pathway helps aspiring coaches gain experience and work towards these roles.
